Get Oranized #6: Gift Card Balances

Remember that brand new laptop I mentioned here? Needs a new hard drive. In the first week of ownership. Blah. Someone should be here to replace it tomorrow or Wednesday. Thanks, Dell. Here’s a little something to tide you over….
This is a minor organization tip, but it helps me A LOT.
Do you have trouble remembering what the balance is on gift cards?

I used to wrap the receipt with the balance around the card and then shove it back in my wallet. It was a hot mess.

My new and impoved solution? The cute little Sharpie on the right.

I found it near the check out at Lowe’s for 97 cents. It hooks right on my keychain. Now when I get the balance on a gift card, I take out my Sharpie and write it on the front of the card.

Nice idea. I use Sharpies for everything. How nice to have one with me at all times!

  2. I couldn't find out what issues you were having with your Dell – the link went to a you tube video – I bought a Dell in June and have had nothing but issues with it – I blogged abt it here – http://jos2ndact.blogspot.com/2009/11/trials-and-tribulations.html

I hope you have better luck than I have had I will never buy another Dell

  3. Great idea! except for those pesky vanilla visa gift cards. Seeing that they charge 2.50 a month if it is not used. I hate that!

  4. I do this same thing! But I must get a key-chain sharpie… I just haul a regular one around in my purse.

  5. Calamity Anne says:

I do the exact same thing, that way I know exactly what's on the card at all times.

I love these organizational posts. Please keep them comin!

  7. Wow, you have balances on gift cards? That would be new for me….. :) Love your blog.

  8. No fair with the laptop troubles. I live in the land of Dell, want me to sic my posse on them? ;)

You think of everything. my life would be so much easier if I put some of this stuff into practice.

  9. we got a new dell laptop in December and have already had a new hard drive put in too.
    dang dell!

I love all your organization tips!

How genius – I'm doing this on my next trip.

  11. Coming from a business owners' standpoint that loves to be 'green' and reuse gift cards for future customers, this solution is a pain. It takes forever to get sharpie off so it looks like new! There has to be a better solution…

  12. i have done this a few times myself – after finding myself in the same HOT MESS!!! a mr clean magic erasers take off sharpie – so that may help if you want to reuse – however, haven't tried it on a gift card – may also eventually take off the picture on the front!

  13. Such a simple idea!

    Thanks for sharing :)

  14. Just happened to come across your blog today while I was at home with a sick little one. :)

A tip from a teacher: Fingernail polish remover takes permanent marker off most everything! I have only had one time that it didn’t come off perfectly. It was really old marker on a laminated paper.

  15. I can just picture my 2yr old when he gets a hold of my keys…which would be his top priority with one of these attached! :) lol…i actually do the sharpie thing to my gc’s when I get home. Sharpies, knives and a million other “fun” things reside on top of my fridge for another couple years!

to PP re: reusing gc’s…i saw suggestions for Magic Eraser, nail polish remover… but you can also put a piece of scotch tape on the card, write on it with the sharpie, and remove & replace the tape as needed

  16. I love your ideas. Looking forward to using them to help get me organized!

  17. Rite-Aid and Desires Treatment both carry them as well, in the identical cash amounts.
