The Smelly Barn Adventure™

First of all, remember when I confessed to the entire world that I’ve worn the same funky (not the good funky) sandals for the last 12 years?

They have been replaced by these:

And these:

(which totally looked better before I fell on my face in a parking lot and before The Smelly Barn Adventure™)

I’m afraid I now have a Born addiction.  Even with the heel (2” or so) they’re comfortable for an entire day.

So my neighbor Jami is my partner in most things insane and probably the person I’m mostly likely to be arrested with.  You all have a friend like that, right?  We saw an ad on our local online classifieds that said “BUY DEAD PEOPLE’S STUFF” and we knew we had to go….in her father in law’s 1983 yellow (stick shift) Chevrolet pick up.  You know, to haul all of our treasures.  Or to look like the Joad family fleeing California in The Grapes of Wrath.  You decide.

After a quick stop for donuts, we were on our way.  We spotted a yard sale and stopped.  I stepped off a curb wrong and did one of those falls where you know you’re going down but you fight it for about 10 seconds in slow motion.  I hopped up and pretended I was fine, but there was blood involved and I’m pretty sure I strained a neck muscle.

Finally, we found our destination and The Smelly Barn Adventure™ began.  We walked in and the lady said “Can’t you just smell the bargains?”  Yes, it was that bad.

Urine.
Mouse poop.
Pigeons.
Baby pigeons.
Broken glass.

But oh the treasures!

(I’m totally recreating this purse because I love it that much.  I don’t think you can grasp it’s full awesome-ness from this pic alone.  Look for the tute next week.)

Jami scored a table almost identical to this one.

So what if at our next stop I found baby pigeon feathers still stuck to my heels?

  1. Awesome!!! And I LOVE both of those shoes. I'm in desperate need of both black and brownish shoes just like that. Maybe we'll be twinsies. I'm for SURE coming to visit you now :)

I saw that ad in the paper and thought "what the heck?" it was a very strange ad but it did peak my interest – I am glad you went (and posted about) just to satisfy my curiosity!!

    • The kill switch is great but it closes all open Acrobat windows, including some that I’d like to stay open. Is there any way to just close the pdf of interest?

  3. what is the The Smelly Barn Adventure™?!? i'm so curious!??

  4. I just wanted to say that I love Born shoes too. I have 2 pairs of Mary Janes – one brown and one black and they are so comfy. Best shoes ever.

  5. Jennifer @ The Toy Box Years says:

Oh gosh – I laughed at this post!! And you can never go yard-sale'ing without a good donut and a cup of coffee!

    Great job on the finds!

  6. Brockett's says:

One man's junk is another man's treasure! I inhereted that exact table when I got married and hated it for the longest time. I gave it back to my mother years ago but I can appreciate it now.

  7. I am planning on going tomorrow, I am so excited! was stuff a reasonable price?

  8. Real Life Reslers says:

The same sandals for 12 years?!?! Yes, I know, I'm a little late on that one but I missed the other post. Hope you're ok from your fall!

  9. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Janae, Some was fabulous, some was not. I left a wash tub thing on legs there because she wanted $110 for it (aka more than Jami's table). It was an adventure, for sure.

  10. Michelle says:

Glad you survived the fall and is it you TMing The Smelly Barn Adventure? Does that mean that I nor anyone else can ever use that phrase again? ;)

  11. The Bronson Bunch says:

That sounds like a fun outing! Where did you find info on it? I would love to check out some dead peoples stuff! LOL

  12. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Jess, it was just on ksl.com in the yard sale section. I think it was 13200 S and just barely east of Redwood.

  13. The King's says:

Love the Born shoes! I actually bought that same pair of brown ones during the lunch break at the CBC on Saturday! Nordstrom Rack had a good deal on them.

  14. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

That is precisely where mine came from. And I had a $40 gift certificate….woo!

  15. Love the shoes! I am a Born addict as well…

Dunford Bakeries. You're from my neck of the woods. How did I not here about the smelly barn. I read the paper every day! In any event, sounds like it really was a true adventure.

  16. I'm in love with Born as well. They are so comfortable and will last a long time!

  17. Pati @ A Crafty Escape says:

Your post made me LOL… I have a friend just like that and she's my neighbor too!

  18. amy smart says:

    Um, try again.

Your adventures made me lol too. I wish I could have been there to "smell the bargains" as well. And to check out your new shoes. Because my yearly splurge on new Old Navy flip-flops is probably going to come back to haunt me in future knee and back issues.
