So You Want To Be A Slurpee…

***Enter The Pleated Poppy giveaway here. It closes tonight!***

You’d better take a sedative, because that’s the only way anyone should ever commit to replicating these costumes.

Here are a few of the specifics, if you’re interested:

The “cup” is cloth automotive headliner fabric (like for the interior roof of your car). I picked it up locally at Hancock Fabrics and then I started to paint.

And paint.

And paint.

It took over a gallon of white latex paint, just to get a basecoat.

And then I did a 2nd coat (took MUCH less).

I taped off each “cup” into sixths.

I found a Slurpee font and downloaded it. Then I used my Silhouette to cut the lettering out of freezer paper. (Tip: When cutting freezer paper with a Silhouette, use the green/cardstock mat, put the dull side down, and cut your design backwards.) The freezer paper only stuck marginally to the painted surface. I had to paint carefully, but it worked out OK.

The red lettering is acrylic craft paint. The blue is latex pain.

I hot glued a “casing” along the top edge. I used sprinkler funny pipe for the frame.

The straws are red pool noodles.

The beverage portion is tulle. There’s also a coordinating colored “collar” hot glued and Gorilla taped inside the rim of the cup. It has an elastic casing to slip over the head.

Love it Char! I also loved hearing your story of painting and painting and PAINTING and then painting some more. Because that is exactly how I feel right now! They turned out awesome though, so it was worth the effort.

    Happy Halloween!

  17. Crafty Christina says:

  34. Those are really cute but you are insane! I mean that in the best way. :)

  35. Those are adorable! I would be crazy enough to make something like that. I make a food themed costume every year for my 7 year old. We've done popcorn, corn on the cob, eggs & bacon, pizza, and this year a pinata (not food, but he is stuffed with candy). Great job!

  50. I just finished the body of this costume for my 11 year old granddaughter. I sewed together 3 blue and 3 white 12″ x 58″ strips of heavy felt. I hemmed the bottom and on the top I used a small 60″ hoola hoop, sewing the material around it. The letters will be made out of felt, we’re using heavy blue netting and found a bendable toy that looks like a straw. It only took me about 3 hours to make the body but anticipate a few extra hours to do the lettering. Will try to post a picture when done.

    • Erin Byrge says:

This is the same approach I took. I used polar fleece instead of felt, but same idea. Pretty easy, actually. Unless you hate to sew. Sewing in the hoola hoop took an extra set of hands – but it turned out so cute!

      • I ended up using a quilting hoop instead of the hula hoop, as once the fabric is held between the two rings you can tighten it down. It worked great.

  51. How many yards of fabric do you need for one costume?

  52. R. U. Kidding??? Wow, wow, wow………..Char, you are the bomb!!!

  53. Thanks so much for this idea. I made these for my kids this Halloween, using your instructions and modifying to fit my materials. They got a ton of compliments!

  54. SO awesome and I want to thank you so much. You totally inspired my uncreative self to make this and it was a huge hit! Beyond!! I wish I could post a picture of it but don’t know how to do that. For our straw we painted the inside of a wrapping paper roll red. I glue gunned everything but sewed the material around the hula hoop. It turned out so great. A millio
    Thanks!!!

  55. What a clever costume – these Slurpee costumes are so cool!

  59. Cell phones can really come in handy when one is in a jam, but cell phones have also brought out the
worst in people, especially when they are behind the steering wheels of their cars.
It was also very light-handed and a lot of fun in the rehearsals.
They may not manufacture the item themselves, but instead contract it out.

  60. Thank you for the idea. I made the costume for my husband to wear to our trunk n treat. It was a hit.

I used a white tablecloth. The kind that is vinyl. Then used blue painters tape for the blue part. I printed out the letters. Cut them, then put the painters tape around them. The red letters I spray painted. Then hot glued on. They were paper too. I used an old shirt for the inside. It worked perfectly. Hot glue is awesome! And of course glued the outside to the pipe. The pipe was the key that put it all together.:)

  61. hey I know it’s been awhile from when you posted this but I thought I would try.. I am doing a slurpee costume this year and I can’t find the slurpee font…. Can you tell me the name of the font you used?

    thanks

  62. Nice job

  63. Very good post. I’m experiencing many of these issues as well..
