Finally somewhere to sit!

We bought our piano about 6 years ago. It’s 90 years old. The bench was long gone. I’d searched half-heartedly for something off and on, but made do with a kitchen chair. Plus, I’m not the one that does most of the playing so it wasn’t really a priority.

I decided to get serious about my search after I painted the piano last summer. I figured that I could paint just about anything to match, right?

In my search, I discovered something. Piano benches are hard to come by, unless you are a) made of money or b) a fan of padded black vinyl seats. I am neither. I’m also not traditional. I found this stool in the Sundance catalog.

Perfect…other than the $200 price tag. And the fact that it’s too tall to actually fit under my piano. But, it got me thinking. I Googled and Googled and Googled some more. I finally found this stool…perfect size, but I still didn’t like the price. I Googled some more and found it for $65. SOLD!
I didn’t really love the black “leather” on the seat. So, I went to a thrift store and bought the most hilariously ugly lime green leather jacket you have ever seen. (And of course I ran into a friend’s parents while I was buying it. Pretty sure they went home and told her how poor Char has lost her mind and she buys weird leather jackets from the thrift store.) The cashier looked heart broken when I told her I was going to cut it up. I peeled off the black and used it to trace a circle from the back of the jacket. Then, I used contact cement to glue the lime green leather down.
And I love it.
***If you’re considering buying contact cement DO NOT buy it from a specialty leather store. They wanted $20 for a can. The same can was $4 at Lowe’s.***

  1. Great job. I love it and the green is perfect…even if it was from an old ugly jacket. I sure hope the cashier wasn't going to buy it on her lunch hour!

Shelah…I have 3 of them, but they're all in use (2 at the ends of my table and 1 at my computer desk in the kitchen). You come up with a fabulous solution for the computer area and the spare chair is yours.

    :o)

  13. The Harding Hive says:

I'm pretty sure my old boyfriend in high school had that same horrible leather jacket. Hey, maybe it was his!

  14. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Contact cement = sort of like rubber cement. You apply it to both items you want to glue and let it dry for a few minutes. When the 2 sides make contact, they stick for good. They use it for laminate counter tops and stuff.

I just saw that Sundance stool in Country Living…yours is awesome!

  18. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Erma, my husband ordered it on his email account, so I can't check right this second. I did, however, go to Shopzilla and type in the model number and found several places that had it in that price range. SAF6669 is the model number.

  19. Joni Walton says:

If you ever need brown leather, give me a call. For some reason we are still holding on to Jerry Sienfeld's brown leather jacket from the very early 90's. :) Love the green chair.

  20. Benches are so hard to come by. I'm about to replace mine, too. Love the stool!

  21. I love your piano and I love what you used to hold your piano books. Genius. I found a cool wood one at a garage sale for $10 and it has been sitting in my garage and I put it by my piano tonight. Thank you as this was a problem area for me.

  22. Ok, Char. I'm on a mission to find you the perfect computer chair. :P
