Rubber Cement Dyed Eggs

***Even though my sister has done it and lived, DO NOT eat these eggs***

Supplies:

Drizzle your eggs with rubber cement. We tried a couple of different methods.

Holding it:

DSC_0586

Doing half and then waiting for it to dry and doing the other half:

DSC_0589

Get it good and drizzled.

DSC_0582

Let the rubber cement dry. We used a hair dryer to speed things up.

And staring.

DSC_0585

I’m not sure if either actually helped.

Once the rubber cement is dry, dye them as usual.

Let them dry.

DSC_0595

Drying rack instructions here.

Once they’re dry, rub off the rubber cement.

Macy must have been rubbing super fast, because both pics I took of this step are blurry.

  19. LOVE THESE! I am going to share the link to these on my blog…

Thanks can not wait to make them.

  20. Courtney Price ~ Vintage Ginger Peaches says:

The only step I would worry about is the hairdryer (as to food safety), but it should be okay as long as the rubber cement doesn't get inside the shell, right?

  21. "Cottage By The Sea" says:

Those are BEAUTIFUL!!!! I can't wait to make some. Happy Easter

  22. Liz @ Sugarplum Creations says:

Oh cool! I love how they turned out! :)

  23. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

I don't know about the food safe-ness (or lack thereof) of it all. I couldn't even eat an egg for $100.

My blow dryer hasn't had heat in a couple of years, so I'd guess that part was safe enough.

And, I used food coloring. I forgot to buy a dyeing kid last year and just ended up using the directions on the box of food coloring and I won't go back! SO easy and great colors!

  24. The bottle of rubber cement says DANGER on it, with a strict warning about the toxicity of the glue and it's vapors.

I certainly wouldn't eat an egg that had been covered in toxic goo.

I wouldn't recommend this project at all, actually. Definitely not worth the risk.

  25. I love these! They turned out so good.
    Thanks for posting this.

  40. Awesome idea…. I wonder if I have rubber cement at home.

    Have a happy easter!

  47. Erika Jean says:

I made Easter eggs bcause of this post! I'll never make them ANY other way anymore.

    Here are mine!!

  48. My Mercurial Nature says:

those are sooo cute and fun!! I'll be trying it out, for sure!

  49. We tried this idea but with a hot glue gun instead of the rubber cement. My Kindergartner Teacher Aunt said absolutely not to the rubber cement on something that you eat… Turned out cute with the glue gun, just have to be careful with the little fingers. Try to do that part a little early and then have the kids help peel it off…

  50. Kris and Trish says:

THANK YOU!!! This was such a great idea!! I actually went to my mother's house and her and I did it to a few eggs too!! We also dyed some eggs pink then drizzled the glue over them… and dropped them in blue… so they came out purple with pink swirls!! You are awesome!!

  51. Hit this after Easter, BUT I love it, and I will totally do it next year! Love your site…you have awesome stuff as always.

Come over and check my blog out sometime. I would be ever so happy!

  54. Love these! I'm going to try it.

  55. Egg shells are POROUS, so the TOXIC chemicals in the rubber cement WOULD get into the eggs.
Would the old, wax method be safer?

    • Litlbitartsy says:

Use paraffin wax melted in either a soup can in boiling water or a potpourri/ oil pot which is safer. Get different size art paint brushes, dip them in the wax and paint on eggs. Better than the wax crayons. Then dye as usual.

    • parafin wax is used in canning to seal jars, it is meant to be near food so this could be an alternative. You would find this with the canning supplies in your local grocery shop

  56. So cool! Honestly, it never would've occured to me about them being unsafe to eat. But then, we eat a lot of things around here that certainly wouldn't meet health dept standards, lol. I think I'll try hot glue though since I already have that. Can you even buy rubber cement anymore?

  57. Crystal - crafty ave says:

You can still find rubber cement. I bought some the other day and just made these eggs. They look really cool as decorations but we won't risk eating them :)

  58. I just linked back to you with this post. :) Great idea!!

    http://tinyurl.com/3on3h3y

  59. I totally plan on doing this with my eggs and eating them after. Its just on the shell… but i understand why people don’t want to feed them to their kids. I just disagree :P

  60. Paige Gillenwater says:

You can also use a white crayola crown and write on the egg. You can even spell names you just gotta remember where the last letter you wrote was but it is not that hard just write like you normally do then dye them as you normally would and when they dry the design or lettering from the white crown is showed in white. This works because the wax in the crayon is resistant to the dye. Oh, and you can totally eat these eggs too!

  61. very neat

  62. Darelynn lay says:

I LOVE this idea…and wouldn’t worry about eating them myself…(the kids could eat the “safer” ones). I’m 62 years old and we ate a lot of the things that now scare you youngsters. (sissies…lol) We used to use gold spray paint and have really cool looking eggs…and we ATE them too. *gasp!* I’m still living with no health problems except Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is hereditary. I had some rubber cement in the house…yes, you can still get it…I found it at my GROCERY store with the school supplies. Wish I had seen this before Easter…and I didn’t dye eggs until the night before, either!

  63. How do your colors turn out so brilliant? What do you use?

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

I used food coloring, I think. It’s been a few years so I’d say I’m only about 90% sure on that.

  64. If you’re worried about not wasting the contents of the egg, you could always blow out the egg yolk and white, and just dye the shell. Still pretty, no waste.

  65. Anne Anderson says:

Why couldn’t you blow the eggs, and then dye them, they would be beautiful in a bowl, or maybe hot glued toa wreath. Then use the eggs for baking or poaching for breakfast.

  66. These are so beautiful. I linked to this in my post of Valentine’s Day Dyed Eggs http://www.morewithlessmom.com/index.php/2014/02/13/valentines-day-dyed-eggs/

  67. A lot of stores now sell eggs that are dyeable with no food inside. Example would be walmart…look in their easter/seasonal aisle.
