Be Thankful

I was going to show you my (possibly too) yellow front door today and revisit the paint bucket planters I made last year, but I changed my mind.

If you follow Crap I’ve Made on Facebook, you’re already aware of the fact that I jacked up my foot a couple of weeks ago.

Long story short:  I fell off of my shoes.

(the guilty pair)

Long story not short:  I went with some friends to be part of the first ever live audience on Studio 5.  I was pulling up my pants and talking and walking across a parking lot at the same time and I went down hard.  I was also carrying my camera.  My Kelly Moore bag kept it safe and sound.  My ankle?  Not so lucky.

(the day of the injury)

I was on crutches for a couple of days (if you see any pics of me meeting Heather Bailey or at the Quilt Market Meet Up, you’ll get to experience the awesomeness of the rented crutches).  I ditched them so I could get through airports to Kentucky with luggage by myself.  I was NOT riding one of those carts.  Nope.  No way.  No how. (And the dr said putting weight on it wouldn’t hurt anything, if I could stand it.  I’m not super reckless…just mildly so. Open-mouthed smile)

(super awesome bruising/drainage, about 4 days after the injury)

My foot still hurts.  It’s still too swollen for anything other than flip flops.  It’s still a weird color.  It’s been like 12 days and I’m kind of sick of it.

Confession:  Combined with some other crap (nothing major…just life) that’s going on, I’ve been having a little bit of a pity party.  Or maybe a lot of a pity party.

Today I’m going to be thankful.  I’m going to bust out the note cards and write some thank you notes.  I’m not going to make them, and I’m not going to have any guilt about that.  Nope.  None.  A thank you note from the dollar section at Target is still a thank you note, right?  I mean, I WILL still stamp my return address with my fancy Purple Lemon Designs stamp and stuff….

So, I challenge you to do the same.  Thank someone today.  Send an email, make a call, craft a card…whatever!  Just be thankful.

And I may have split my head open on a plantation shutter last night.  Perhaps I should consider some full body armor?

  1. Dear Char,
Today I’m thankful that I CAN walk on my foot. On 4/8 I had surgery to remove a bone spur and repair my Achilles tendon. I was not able to walk on my foot for 6 weeks. I had to use one of those knee scooters to get around. Once I was able to start walking again, my knees started to protest the abuse. Found out I have arthritis now in both knees. A shot of steroids to my left knee has me out of pain, but someday, my right knee is going to be replaced.
But today, I can kind of walk without too much pain. And I can drive again. And one day, I even hope to be able to go up and down stairs again without crying.
Aren’t you glad your foot is bruised and will heal soon? :D I know your pain and frustration. Hang in there and give yourself permission to take it easy.

  2. Ouch, Char!

No more beating up on yourself! Thanks for this reminder. I needed it today!

  3. OUCHY!
    great attitude, tho.

  4. Love you. You can have a pity party on my shoulder anytime :)

  5. Oh Char, that looks terribly painful! I hope you have a full recovery soon.

I can’t wait to see your yellow front door! I painted mine yellow a couple of years ago and it still makes me smile, it’s so bright and cheery!

  6. SO SORRY you’re having a rough week!!! Very cool that you decided to be thankful today though! Bet nobody notices that the thank yous aren’t handmade!!! Life happens and a sweet thanks is still very cherished!!! Feel better!!!

  7. I am sorry you are having a rough week. I think it is all the non fountain Diet Coke that was in your system form KY.
Hopefully a car full of friends headed to a cupcake shop to take pictures will cheer you up. And then you will have to call and tell me all about it!

  8. Thanks, Char. I needed that. Been having a bit of a pity party over here this week myself. I’m off to write a few thank you notes of my own. And yes, it is the thought that counts. I don’t remember ever opening a thank you note or card and thinking, “Hey, they didn’t even take the time to make it themselves?”. Nope. Just always been thrilled to receive something in the mail. Here’s hoping things look up for you!

  9. I’m so sorry about your ankle, but I have to tell you – I love those orange shoes.

  10. I feel ya, I’ve been throwing my own pity party. I had a toothache… had a tooth (or three) pulled… had an infection… had a swollen face… that infection went away, got some sort of sinus infection related to a tooth with a super long root that was all the way up in my sinuses instead… feel dizzy/woozy whenever I stand thanks to that one… oy. I’m sick of feeling off my game, I have things to do! Kids to parent! Quilt tops to sew!!!!
Lets have a pity party together, we can have some whine and cheese ;)

  11. My ankle(s) do that every other year! It’s lovely. Last time was 9 days before giving birth! Sweet! Talk about going down….weird. Nothing like a preggo belly to throw things off.

I’m thankful for your sense of humor and “realness.” You rock!

  12. Oh your poor foot! I took your advice and made cookies to share today. thanks!

  13. Goodness! You’ve been through the ringer. I hope you have a full stock of Diet Coke on hand to combat all the injuries. If you don’t, I will bring you some. Since we’re practically neighbors.

  14. Char, I am a first time commentor. I love your blog and your funny, positive attitude. I sprained my ankle and I know it hurts like crazy for a long time. Have you been to the doctor? I didn’t go and finally after SIX months of hurting I went. He put me in a compression ankle brace and I was better soon. Take care.

  15. Oh, wow…. that looks so painful. :(

  16. Daffodil says:

Bless your heart. THANK YOU for sharing this. I have been having tough times lately (who knew parenthood was so DIFFICULT sometimes?) and have even stopped getting enjoyment from reading blogs, because they’re all “we made homemade peanut butter on the deck today and my kids were well-behaved the whole time!” and “look at how to make an organic BPA-free recycled coloring book in eleventy-five steps, and your kids won’t even mind if you take all day to do it!” and “the kids and I rolled bandages for orphanages in Bangladesh for eight hours today and then we frolicked in the daisies and enjoyed being together!” and I hated feeling like the only person on earth who wasn’t delighted by being alive. So thank you for the peek behind the curtain. It’s a welcome relief to feel connected and human again, even if it is due to your bum ankle.

I really hope your ankle gets better soon. Like five minutes ago soon.

  17. I grew up playing soccer so I find bruised & swollen ankles to be an award. In order to get a bruise like that, you really have to fall hard. So, props to you! (I hope that you can see it from the same point of view as me!) Anyways, I love your blog & I wanted to let you know that. I understand that life is getting you down, but keep remembering that over 5,000 people adore your blog. xox

  18. Hope you are feeling better soon!! – Though they were pretty fabulous shoes to fall off of. ;)
Thanks for the reminder to take some time and be thankful!!

  19. Char,

Today I am grateful for you. I am lucky to have you in my life. I love you. AND, if you cant stand looking at those gorgeous orange shoes, I will gladly take them off of your hands.

    xoxo
    Tauni

Ouch! I’ve been having a pity party of my own, but you’re right, time to be. Thankful and grateful.
Greetings from a very chilly South Africa!

  24. You should be proud of that crap. That is one gnarly ankle. That crap doesn’t just fall from the sky, you have to mess it up just right to get it that swollen. Hope it feels better soon.
