Framed Monogram

Remember how I told you I made something?

This is it:

I LOVE monograms, but C is officially THE most boring letter for a monogram in the history of monograms.  And, the room it’s going in has a horse trough for a coffee table, so a regular old C in a frame wasn’t going to cut it.  I needed something with a little “kick”.

I took a regular old Hobby Lobby frame and spray painted it glossy orange.  Good start, but it still needed a little more oomph!

The background is green, cut with my Silhouette, but I suspect I could have found a patterned paper that would have worked just as well.  However, I would have had to put pants without an elastic waistband and shoes on for that, so…

The C is the lowercase one from JFFerrule.  I cut that with my Silhouette as well.  It’s one lone letter, so you could for sure cut it out with scissors if you’re not Silhouette inclined.  And then I used spray adhesive to mount everything to a white backing paper.

Cute with my Target lamp (which is currently marked down to $18!), right?

  1. Very cool…. and I totally understand the waistband thingy!! I never thought of putting one in a frame… can i borrow that idea??? :0)

  2. Oh I’ve so been wanting to do this for my kids room. so when you spray paint a frame do you have to sand or prime or anything or do you just paint. Love the color of your frame so fun!

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

      Emily,

I didn’t sand or prime because the finish was rough and it’s not going to get a whole lot of traffic (i.e. it’ll just sit on a shelf and not be handled much). If it had had a glossy finish, I would have sanded a little to rough it up.

love this idea! i also love monograms. our last name starts with M, which makes for a nice monogram for the ocd inclined (me). i have them all over our house! for my next monogram, i’m planning on using the “frosted glass” vinyl, and cutting out a large monogram for our glass shower door. but i may do this, first!!!

  4. i LURVE it! You are awesome!

  5. I have monograms all over my house! For a long time I decorated my husbands and my bedroom in our monograms…I only have a few of them left. I’m a “C” too and I’ve thought it was pretty boring….but yours is fun and cheery!

  6. Very cute! I do like monograms…and yours is especially fetching. (If you think “C” is boring, try “O”) When I was a newlywed (18 yrs. ago) I had a wax seal with an “O” on it. I stamped and framed that. I liked having that raised, red wax monogram in an apple green frame. So fun and unusual.

  7. I love monograms! We have the letter B displayed in many of our rooms! I think I heard my husband say once….”ok, ok, we get the point!” :)

  8. I love monograms and I REALLY love yours! My last initial is “C” also and I agree – it’s really hard to find a good “C”. At least it’s not “O” – I think that’d be even worse ;)

  9. Love the orange ~ my favorite color. Laughing at your comment about pants w/o elastic waist as I’m sitting in my jammies reading blogs and it’s almost 10 o’clock. I must get off the couch.

  10. That looks fantastic! But I think C is a pretty cool looking letter. L on the other hand? Totally boring.

  11. I love the orange and it looks great with the green lamp. If you think C is boring try J, it’s right up there. But I still love monograms. I’m up to 25 going up my stairs right now.

  12. I like Monograms. We are an S and it works pretty well. I made a fabric monogram from a blog tutorial a while back and love it. It’s framed by our front door. I really like the bright orange!

  13. I love monograms and I have a button one hanging in our front room. I love it!

  14. This is so cute Char!! I think I”m going to have to get some frames and super bright colors to paint them. I love how summery this looks!

  15. LOVE this! I have been commissioned to make bedding for a friend’s nursery and think this would be a great way to use some of my scrap fabric (for background) to make a coordinating gift! Thanks for always sharing such great ideas!

  16. I am loving monograms at the moment. Just did a post about one myself as a present!

But I have some fabric on its way to me as I type to cover one for my mantle, seriously too excited about the fabric! Love your idea and the bold colours, I need to use more because it makes a huge difference in a room.

  17. I love your monogram – love the color too! I was an actual typesetter, back in the early 80s before desktop publishing, and have always been drawn to the artistic value of letter shapes. The ampersand is my favorite “letter” shape. :) Too funny about the pants w/out elastic waist – I can SO relate.

  18. LOL! I have the same problem. Even though I love monograms, C is definitely always disappointing or boring! Love your take on it though!

  19. Danielle says:

I have a Silhouette and you always inspire me and I especially LOVE that you always include the font! :)

  20. Hey Char,
I’m not into monograms but I definitely love the letter C. My mom and sister’s names both begin with this letter. And I love the green Target lamp eh.

  21. I really like what you did with the frame and adding the C! Very inspirational!

  22. I love the orange with the green! My house needs more color–I need to be more daring for sure! I think I’ll give a brightly colored frame with a monogrammed ‘B’ a try!

  23. OH!! This is great! I love it! And dudes my favorite color is orange!! LOVE Char, LOVE!!! :)

  24. I have to disagree and say that the letter “I” is the most boring letter for monograms. Always ends up looking like a Roman numeral to me. I did do a frame with 3 letters though (an “R” for my husband, an “A” for me, and then the “I” for our last name inbetween), and it’s not quite as boring. I love the color of your frame! I should really spray-paint stuff more. :o)

  25. LOVE how this project turned out! C monograms rock…just saying!

  26. love it Char!!
    thumbs up :)

  27. This is semi-irrelevant but what size is your frame? Great idea. Love the green and orange together. I think I’ll do this for an xmas gift.

  28. Another question. Difference between a Cricket and the Silhouette? Anyone else have pro’s/con’s. I had a Cricket but got rid of it now I am starting to think about getting another on Ebay. The Silhouette looks interesting too.

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Jen, I had a Cricut briefly. I’m a HUGE fan of the Silhouette, mostly because you don’t have to buy cartridges (you just download a design from the store for 99 cents tops) and the software (which allows for easy modifications/creations of your own designs and cuts all true type fonts for free).
