Dyed Doily Pillows

Let’s get in our time machines and go back to June 9, 2010.  I posted this.

I’d taken some ratty old thrift store doilies (I’ve recently spotted doilies at Dollar Tree and JoAnn’s, if thrift stores aren’t your thing) and dyed them with Dylon dye.

I told you I was going to make pillows.

Well, I finally did.  And it only took me 433 days.

Supplies:

Canvas drop cloth (or other fabric for the body of the pillow)
Doily (dyed or not…your choice)
Sewing machine and thread

Random blah blah blah about the body of the pillow:  I had an 18” pillow form, so I cut my front piece 18” X 18”.  I used the already hemmed drop cloth edges to cut two 12” X 18” (this was the hemmed edge) pieces for the envelope closure on the back.  If you don’t have a hemmed edge, you’ll want to cut yours bigger to allow for hemming.

I centered the doily on my square of fabric and pinned it in place.

I used a zig zag stitch to sew around the edges and to tack down part of the middle as well.  Since I used matching thread, you can hardly see it.

Here’s a shot of the back, to give you a better idea:

And, that’s it.  Put the pillow together and you’re finished!

  1. LOVE the bright color against the burlap cloth! :) Very cool!

  2. And where might one find Dylon dye? Do I just miss it at the craft store or did you order it? Love the doily on the pillows.

  3. Char that is fabulous!!! I’m not normally a doily kind of gal…but that just looks like a lacy flower with the dye. :) Once again, another reason I wish I sewed.

  4. Oh and btw, I LOVE your denim couch (or chair?)! I have always wanted a denim slipcovered couch. I think just like a pair of jeans…it goes with anything and says “we are casual people”!! I’ve always imagined you could add pink sparkly pillows to snazzy it up or a sweater pillow to comfy it down. :)

  5. Ok I love the pillows but…………I really love that couch. I want it…..Do you know who makes it?

  6. Oooh…I was going to make doily pillows. But I hadn’t thought of dying them! lovely!

  7. So fun and perfect timing that you post this… I just bought doilies and dye for clothing purposes:)

  8. Very cute!!! I love the color that you used. I’ve been seeing more and more doily pillows around but I love your idea of dying them fun colors and using them that way! I might have to give them a try! Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. Super cute!!

  10. cute as a well… doiley!!! so bright and cheerful :)

  11. This is amazing! I love it!

  12. I LOVE the colors you chose for the doilies. The pillow turned out so cute too Char! I have been looking for some doilies for my project, but I haven’t found the ones that I have in mind (I have been to Joann’s, and Dollor Tree as well). I am really hoping that I will find a bag full of doilies at a thrift store. :)

  13. Shut up…..that is awesome! I love doilies. I can’t help myself but I do! I’ve been wanting to frame some. My MIL gave me a ton and I’m sure I could dye some of those! Love this project!

  14. Char, so pretty. I love your new pillows. I am also going to beg you to let me come thrifting with you one of these days…

    xoxo

  15. Those are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing. :)

  16. K, I love this, and I was just wondering where that other pillow came from. Did you make it or buy it? The green shaggy one….Thanks!

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

I bought it locally at Taipan Trading. Vanessa over at V & Co has a tutorial to make one that has a similar look…

  19. Love the doily pillow, Char! I have thought of making one too (maybe I got the idea when you posted about it forever ago?) but haven’t found any doilies at my usual thrift stores. I’ll have to check out the dollar store.

  20. I love the dyed doilies. I need to find some doilies for a project of my own!

  21. LOVE the doilies…the colours are to DYE for! LOL! And I love your couch…is that the Cindy Crawfort collection? I tried talking hubby into buying denim couches and he vetoed that idea :( wish I tried harder!!!! Love it! Looks sooo perfect together!

  22. Love! I’ve had a doily pillow project on my sewing table the whole summer just haven’t taken the hour to finish it. Love the dyed doily.

  23. What a great idea! LOVE it!!!!

  24. Oh, love this pillow, too. I am behind on reading my blogs, but I always find so much fun stuff on here. I have a whole big storage container of doilies. Think I will make a few pillows from the unknown source ones. Many of mine are from Great, great great Aunts which I have been meaning to frame. Thanks for all your inspirations.

  25. holy cow, i’m in LOVE with this idea, and esp those colors! which dylon die did you use for the turquoise? thanks for your lovely blog!

    • as a grammar and spelling fanatic, i’m rather horrified that i typed “die” instead of “dye”… ACK!

  27. Char! Where did you get that green damask fabric? I have been looking for some. I seriously need you to come to a pillow makeover for my poor bare couch. You rock!

  28. Really really cute!!

  29. I know this is ages past the time you used the dye, but do you happen to remember the color that you used for the aqua doily? I’ve been browsing all the different places that sell Dylon, but I’m not seeing anything that color. I NEEEEEEED to know :)

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

I think the doily was more of a pale green color in real life and I don’t remember if I even used Dylon on that one. I’ll dig through my dye bin and see if I can find any other info!
