Get Organized #8: Vacation Paperwork

In December of 2008, we had a moment of insanity and decided to take the kids to Disneyland.  We took my parents along as reinforcements…it sill wasn’t pretty.

EIGHT people (4 of which were 8, 5, 2, and 8 months at the time) is practically a tour company!

How was I going to make sure I didn’t lose anything important (including all those “print this for your records” things you get when you book online)?

This one came from the dollar section at Target.

Here’s a look at the inside:

Each section had a task:

Airline reservation confirmations and boarding passes

Rental car confirmations (we had to rent 2!)

Hotel reservations

Ticket books (we bought the 3 days at Disney/Universal Studios/Sea World/San Diego Zoo things from Costco)

Birth certificates

It prevented stuff from getting misplaced or lost in the shuffle (the same cannot be said for BC’s laptop at the San Diego airport) and was not bulky to pack around.

Mod Podge glasses case

We’ve all seen these, right?

This particular one came from the dollar section at Target.  Here’s proof:

Functional, but ugly.  I covered it with Mod Podge and fabric and now?

The perfect place to store your glasses (fakes, if you’re Macy).

I used regular old Mod Podge, not the fabric variety, and a paint brush.  I smoothed and pulled as I went.  I found a sheet of wax paper to be the perfect way to keep it from sticking closed while it was drying.  I think I still might glue some trim along the edges, but I haven’t found the perfect one yet.

That’s how Bennett’s behavior the last few days can best be described.

(Why do I have that song from Footloose stuck in my head now?)
First of all, if any of you read me and don’t read Dana at Made and Made by Rae, you’re missing out and you really need to get get a life. :o)
This month, the 2 of them have teamed up for:

It’s an entire month of tutorials and stuff devoted to boys.

Since I have 3 of them (and some of them even still let me dress them), I’m looking forward to it.

And, completely unrelated, my neighbor is hosting a giveaway for a $25 gift certificate to her shop over on her blog. Check it out if you like free stuff.

Big ideas

I had to run to Target early yesterday morning for a birthday present. In an attempt to avoid the re-stocking madness, I cut through the bedding aisle
I picked up these:

I’ve got a plan.

If it turns out the way it looks in my head, it’s going to be awesome.

If not?

At least I’m only out $12.

Valentine Chair Backer

I bookmarked this tutorial from Amy at Our Scoop last year.

We’re making them for sewing group next week.
(Thursday @ 7, my house, treats!)

I needed to do a quick run through first so I don’t screw anyone up and so I just used supplies I had on hand.

I can’t wait to make REAL ones.

Campbell’s giddy about the “new backpacks”. I think this will be a fun new tradition.

Handmade Valentines

Some of you may know that I have a tiny little obsession with making my kids’ Valentines. Remember last year?

Yeah. I still twitch every time I walk past a display of those little boxes of conversation hearts.
This year, I’m doing something a *little* less time consuming. My friend Alissa made these last year:

Get the details here.
Do you make Valentines? Got a great idea you want to share? Did you make something fabulous last year? Here’s a MckLinky party for just that purpose! I’m leaving it open through February 16th, so even those of us that procrastinate can participate. Please link ONLY to the actual post or idea, not your blog’s home page. Those links will be removed.

I have a couple more things to move around and change.
SO close.
I think the whole look will be much cleaner and easier to navigate when I’m through.
I’ve added a menu bar up top, just below my header. Only about half of the links go anywhere right now. I’m working on it!
If your blog needs a menu bar, check out this tutorial.

Headers and scrolling blog buttons

Q: How did you make your new header?

Disclaimer: The only photo editing software I have is little old free Picasa.
I cropped the 4 pictures I liked using the “Square/CD Cover” option. Then, I selected all 4 pictures and clicked on the “Collage” button. I picked the “Grid” option and then changed the aspect ratio to 4 X 1 (because I had 4 pictures and I wanted them in one row). Click “Create Collage” and you’re almost there. Next you’ll need to log in to Blogger and go to the “Layout” tab. Click on the “Edit” button in your header and upload your image. BE SURE TO CHECK THE BOX TO SHRINK YOUR HEADER TO FIT. I missed it the first time, hence the 3 page wide header that some of you encountered.
Q: How did you get your buttons to scroll like that?
(See the right hand sidebar under “I get around”)
Emily from Not So Idle Hands directed me to this tutorial over on Be Different…Act Normal. In the first box of code, I changed the “left” to “up”. And then I copied and pasted the html codes from all my buttons.
