I probably should have mentioned this earlier. I’ve been deep in Halloween costumes for days!
My partner Emily from The Boy Trifecta was the brains and the brawn behind this awesome Kate Spade knock off over at CWTS.
She easily advanced to the next round!
This week’s theme?
Paint.
And Emily’s a sewist (still sounds better than sewer). I’ve got a feeling that her project is going to be fabulous anyway…

try, try, try, try again.
Those are all Buddy the Elf hat rejects. The first one was so bad that I threw the whole hot glue-y mess in the garbage.
It turns out that trying to get a hat band to conform to the shape of a very slanty elf hat is harder than I anticipated.
Ribbon (on the right) was cute, but I didn’t like the little creases and bubbles.
A c-shaped piece of fabric (on the left) laid down nicely, but it was boring.
I got desperate and started thinking about no band at all (center).
And then I thought of my old friend “bias tape”. And we had a winner!
To make the elf hat, I traced one of my big silver mixing bowls (about 13.5″ in diameter) and then cut the circle in half. Next, I added my banding. I did a combination of sewing/gluing. Once that banding was in place, I folded the hat in half and seamed the straight edge.
Then, I folded the bottom edge under about 1/4” and hot glued it in place. I didn’t want any stitching visible. Add a red feather and you’re done!

Those are checkbook covers. I’ve had making one on my to-do list for so long it’s not even funny. (And by “so long” I mean “almost 2 years”…which is when my sister gave me a FABULOUS wallet for Christmas that I still haven’t used on account of needing a checkbook for all things school/kid related.)

The girls over at Makia Creations sent me one of their kits to try and review.
I am NOT a wood crafter. I like fabric. I’m a sewist (sounds better than calling yourself a sewer…just go with it). So, I thought if *I* could do this, ANYONE could.
They sent me the turkey kit with the snowman upgrade.
It’s supposed to look like this:

Could I do it?
I watched the instructional videos. (Seriously…all of them. They’re short, which is good if you want to watch them repeatedly to make sure you don’t screw up. And by “you” I mean “me”.)
It was then that I realized that I’d need some supplies on account of not being a wood crafter. That would probably be the only little snag in putting together my Makia Creation: I didn’t know what else I’d need. Maybe you seasoned wood crafters have all that stuff on hand? A list of additional supplies needed would easily solve that, though. Or (and this would be the smart thing to do), you could also add a supply kit to your order.

12 days ‘til Halloween.
And guess when I started costumes.
Yesterday.
I’d made some good progress by lunch time.
And after lunch, I got the trim on the jacket and the zipper put in.
And Santa’s pants are done, too.
Santa’s jacket is close…just needs fur on the bottom.
Heaven help me with the elf shoes! Any tutorials for THAT? LOL!
