St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

Do you do anything festive?

As long as I can remember, my mom made corned beef and cabbage and Irish soda bread for St. Patrick’s Day dinner. She moved to Florida when I was a newlywed and my brother came to live with BC and I. As St. Patrick’s Day approached, Blake (that’s my brother) asked if I was making our traditional dinner. I said no, because I didn’t think anyone actually liked it. He said “THAT’S UN-AMERICAN!”

Yes, really.

So, I hit the store and we had dinner, just like my mom always made. I even colored our lemonade green. However, I still don’t have a green gingham tablecloth like she did.

Here’s my mom’s soda bread recipe!

Irish Soda Bread

3 c flour
1/4 c sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 c buttermilk
1 1/2 c raisins

Combine all dry ingredients. Stir in buttermilk to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface 5 minutes while adding raisins. Pat to flatten into a 9″ round 1 1/2″ think loaf. Place on greased pan. Cut a cross 1/2″ deep and gently open with finger tips. Glaze with egg white if desired. Bake 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees. Tap on bottom to see if done. Should be a dull thud. (I use my Kitchenaid for all of the mixing/kneading.)

My mom always made the corn beef and cabbage too. And for New Year's Day. We are opting for a more kid friendly dish at our house – my son is PICKY. Notice the all caps there? Brats and green mashed potatoes. Oh, and green cupcakes made with 6 layers of color to look like a rainbow! They are soooo cool looking! I put the how to on my blog!

    Happy St. Patty's Day! :)

  13. "Cottage By The Sea" says:

We had the same dinner right down to the soda bread. We put a ring and a coin inside before we bake it. If you get the ring you will be next to be married. (Has come true several times in our family.) If you get the coin you are going to be prosperous. My husband got it tonight. Hope it comes true because we're gonna need it!

  14. Amazing St Patricks Day article, thanks for sharing this information.
