Spiffy Scissors

Cindy over at Skip to My Lou asked me to participated in her Teacher Appreciation series.  I adore Cindy, so of course I said yes.  Then I realized something:

I’ve never actually appreciated a teacher.  I mean, I’ve appreciated a teacher, I just haven’t ever done anything about it.  Who sucks?  (Hint: me)

Here’s my quick, easy, and inexpensive idea!

Spiffy Scissors

DSC_0224

Supplies:
Scissors (all of mine came from Dollar Tree)
Patterned paper
E6000
Sandpaper or a nail file
Mod Podge Dimensional Magic

I picked papers that coordinated with the scissor handles.

DSC_0197

Cut out pieces of paper the size of the scissor blades.  They don’t need to be exact, but the closer the better.

DSC_0201

Use some E6000 to adhere the paper to the scissor blades.

DSC_0203

Be sure to get the E6000 all the way to the edges.  Trust me on this.

Using a nail file or some sandpaper, sand off the excess paper.  Sand down (i.e. towards the metal).

DSC_0204

See how much  nicer that looks?

Move to a “safe” surface (I used a junky old IKEA cutting board) and apply an even thin layer of Dimensional Magic to one of the scissor blades.  (Dimensional Magic is a little bit fickle.  Be sure to read all the tips and tricks over on Mod Podge Rocks before you start to make your experience a successful one!)

DSC_0210

Let it dry for at least 3 hours and then flip it over to do the other blade.

DSC_0219

The Dimensional Magic dries clear.

I had a happy little accident when I discovered that disposable icing bags were a perfect fit for the scissors.

DSC_0235

I tied them with some ribbon and tags (I used the print & cut option on my Silhouette), but you can make them however you want.

And I solemnly swear that I will publicly thank teachers for the rest of my life.  Starting next year.  Winking smile

  3. I'm a teacher and would love to get a pair.
    great idea.

  4. OhioMomPatriot says:

I am glad to find a Dollar Tree addict like me! Over half the decorating in my house involves something from there…LOL! These are great because teachers can always use more scissors and when someone else wanders off with them, they are easily found!

  5. awesome idea, those are the cutest scissors eva!

  6. Love those! What a great idea. I want my scissors to be pretty.

  7. Kassi @ Truly Lovely says:

That's a creative teacher gift!!! And one they would appreciate I'm sure! I shared this idea on my facebook page, FYI! ;)

  8. Brittany says:

Wow these are really cute! Thanks for sharing!

  9. Gold Shoe Girl says:

Really super clever and don't feel bad I've never done the teacher appreciation gift thing before either. I had never even heard of it until discovering blogs this year:)

  10. Super cute! We didn't do anything last year, on account of not appreciating that teacher. But I'm definately doing stuff for both boys' teachers this year-they rock.

  11. You're brilliant! Inexpensive, yet stunning. I need to try this!

  12. Tammy @ she wears flowers says:

Genius idea–left a comment on Skip to My Lou where I saw it and then copied it so I could leave it here, too so you would be sure to get it. You deserve big kudos! ;)

What a great idea–and teachers always need good scissors! I’m going to pick some up today to make this! Thank you!!

  13. Amy at Ameroonie Designs says:

These are so cute! and completely genius too! Thanks!
    xoxo,
    Amy

  14. Very cute! And the icing bags? BRILLIANT!

  15. Steph @ Crafting in the Rain says:

Awesome! Every time I got into my first-grader's classroom to help, I think the teacher needs better scissors :)

  16. Brett and Ashley says:

What a great idea! Now I just need my son to be old enough to have teachers! :)

  17. Holy wow…you are a genius. And yes, speaking as a teacher, an art teacher in fact, I would LOVE a pair of these.

  18. Jessica @ My World - Made By Hand says:

Super cute…I am totally going to craft lift this. Thanks for sharing :)

  19. OH MY GOODNESS! This is the cutest thing!

  20. Ooooohhhh…..lovin the Magic on the scissors. That stuff might be tough, but it is always worth it when it works. I love this!

  21. what a totally cute project!!!

  22. Two Dollars says:

The first teacher gift I've seen that I like :) Maybe even some Silhouette vinyl on the paper too with their name?

  23. so cute! have you used them, do they hold up to continous cutting?

  24. Never would have though! I think I'm going to make some for my mom with paper that says "MOM'S SCISSORS!" because hers always go missing amongst kids doing homework!
Anyway, what I really want to know is if there is anywhere locally I can pick up those wet erase chalkboard markers. I'm doing a chalkboard paint project and I am not a chalk fan (too messy). But I don't really have time (patience) to order something online. Know anywhere?

  25. so cute and original! i think i will be doing this for my kids teachers! thanks char.

  26. adventuresindinner says:

As a teacher, I will say I would be thrilled! Please, I'm begging everyone, we love your kids but no more plaques.

  27. Lyndee @ A Recovering Craft Hoarder says:

I had to laugh when I saw the decorated scissors. Is there anything a crafter won't touch. You better believe I'm going to be trying this at home…which makes me laugh all the harder. Next on the list? The toilet! Lol! Seriously LOVE this project. I don't have the dimensional stuff yet, but it's going on the shopping list.

  28. June Houck says:

Ooo, who wouldn't want these fancy schmancy scissors? Love it :)

  29. Uber cool. Lots of gift giving opportunities here, not just for teachers. But good for teachers since they usually hate the gifts they get (mugs and candles specifically). I can't imagine anyone would hate one of these. If nothing else, you know it's yours!

  30. Oh! Oh! Oh! This is just fab! I will most definitely be making a few of these to give as gifts. And useful! How many mugs does a teacher really need, right? THANKS so much!

  31. redheadtina says:

Mine didn't turn out as cute as yours, but I'm rather impressed with myself. Thanks for the cool idea.

  32. These are fabulous! I've gotta get my hands on some of that dimensional mod podge! And I think a trip to the dollar store is in order too! :) Great job!!!

    Thanks for sharing :)

  39. Brittiney says:

    LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea!!!!!!!!!!!!

  40. Tamara says:

I love this idea, and the scissors are adorable. I actually think that I’m going to make them for myself. Thanks! :)

But be sure to check with your school’s handbook before sending anything sharp in with your child, gift or not. Schools have zero tolerance policies in place now. My 5th grader took in a pair of small plastic crafting scissors with scalloped edges to make paper bracelets with her friends. We were told by the principal that if they were a quarter of an inch longer, they would have had no choice but to expel.

Maybe call first or take them in with your child?

  41. Love these! seriously considering making my sewing scissors cute now! lol

a big thumbs up over here!
    happy crafting!
    Linda

  42. You must have beginners luck teacher appreciation style, cause these are awesome!

  43. Chelle says:

Yes Yes Yes Thank you! This is perfect!

  44. NaDell Ransom says:

My daughters loved picking out the papers I should use for their teachers and their specials (PE, Library, Computers, Music, Art, and for one of them her speech teacher and classroom para-educator.) Sure I’m making several pairs, but they are so awesome and don’t cost too much. I’m keeping a set for myself too. My girls are excited to take the scissors to their teachers.
I bought some super-duper glue like yours, but couldn’t find dimension magic mod podge, so I just used the regular kind. The first side is drying as I type. I plan on fixing up the other side tomorrow. My scissors are all just boring black because I only had time to go to BigLots instead of Dollar Tree and their $1 scissors were all black.
We picked out music notes paper, baseball, tie dye, and several black and white and red swirled paper (school colors are white, black, and red.)

  45. What meted did you use to spread your glue? A brush? Curious, as I always have glue issues and you commented to be sure to get to the edge.
    Thanks!

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

I used my finger. I suspect that’s not professionally recommend, though. ;)

      • But wait! You are a professional ;)
        Thanks for the tip!
PS: I bet in a few weeks you start seeing these pop up all over etsy…i’m just sayin’

  46. My first batch of glued papers are drying now. I can be a little bit of a neat freak and used the corner of the cardboard paper the glue was in to spread. Also wondering how you managed to get the cuts so perfect on your paper? Did you align them on the top and then sandpaper the bottom only, or on top and bottom, and how long did you wait before you did that?

Your scissors are so cute I had to try them!! And really cheap when you consider $1 for scissors and $10 for the glue and dimensional magic! Love them and I’m sure our teachers will too!!

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

I cut the papers slightly bigger and then glue them in place.

The sanding downward (on each blade) takes off the excess paper and makes it look perfect. The cuts are crap! LOL!

I don’t remember how long I waited…just long enough for the glue to dry.

  47. Wow! You ROCK!

  48. These are AMAZING! I always wonder what will happen when I have kids & it’s teacher appreciation day. Now I can book mark this! so good!

  49. Really cute teacher gift idea. Well, that’s what I’d use it for if I had any little kids left at home. My 16 year old wouldn’t be caught dead taking a present to her teachers now but, back in the day…

  50. I would love to share a photo of these scissors with a link back to your post as part of a weekly series I do called fab five. Email me and let me know if that would be ok. Thanks

  51. I’m a teacher and I love these!!! I want to make some for my teacher friends next year and slip them into their boxes…..CUTE!!!!

  52. Char,
You’re so creative! Cute tag/saying and a great way to personalize the scissors. All beautiful! I want to try making some with the saying on the scissors. I need to get some of that Modge Podge Demensional Magic. I love gifts that are functional too. – Victoria (@obSEUSSed)

  53. super cute idea! thx for sharing!

  54. I just made a couple of pairs of scissors. I added the teacher’s name to one side and my daughter’s name and the year to the other side. I didn’t have any Dimensional Magic on hand, just regular old Glossy Mod Podge. I just applied several layers. They are so cute! THANK YOU for the idea and tute!

  55. These are too cool! Question – is it one piece of paper per blade?

  56. I’m featuring these tomorrow Char because they are AWESOME.

  57. FANtastic! Always on the lookout for different, creative teacher gifts…and these definitely fit the bill. Now….headin’ out the door to get supplies to try this myself…thanks so much for sharing this! :)

  58. Off to make some of these today :) I got an idea to put my own “spin” on it though. I’ll share when I get it done – if it works. ;)

  59. I found another website that uses paper to decorate pens… so I matched the paper with the paper I used on the scissors so it’s a set!!

  64. Somehow I missed these the first time around – GASP! Thankfully you posted the Top 11 in 11 and I got to see them now. My kids are grown and gone, but I’m planning to go on a scrapbooking/sewing retreat with friends in a couple of weeks and I’m going to make these to bring for everybody. I know it will knock their socks off! Thank you so much for sharing your creativity with us.

  66. Jenny Good says:

Hi, I’m so happy to come across this website and can’t wait to make the scissors. My question: can I use another adhesive or even use those new patterned duct tape on the scissors? I am having trouble finding E6000. Thank you.

  67. These are awesome, thank you for sharing! I just bought some of this dimensional, can’t wait to use it!

  68. Cutest idea! I am having trouble getting the paper to stick to the scissors. It seems that once the E6000 glue dries it just peels off the blade. Any suggestions?
