Remember my New Year’s Resolution?
I’m not sure how many new things I’m really trying, but I’m ROCKING it in the literal sense.
I snapped a couple of pictures last week and realized how ridiculously high and tiny my old dining area fixture was.
See? And I’ve lived with it like for SIX years!
So we made a Saturday trip to Lowe’s.
And with the help of two lovely preteen assistants….
And when I asked them to throw out the box, I found this:
Which, sadly, is better than the time the other one’s mom found them like this:
Freezer paper & bleach
You’ve probably already seen this ALL over the internet, so I’m not going to do a detailed tutorial. I am, however, going to tell you what worked for us and what I learned along the way.
One of Macy’s BFF’s has a birthday coming up. We wanted to make her something unique. (Side note: Kristine, don’t let Ashlie read this!)
First we found a font we liked and typed out what we wanted the shirt to say. I printed it, enlarged to our desired size.
Macy traced it onto the non-waxy side of the freezer paper and then I cut it out with an Exacto knife.
I ironed it on to the shirt. Don’t move the iron side to side, you’ll catch small details and rip/remove them.
I put a piece of cardboard inside and put the whole thing on an old towel. I folded the bottom of the towel up over the bottom of the shirt so we wouldn’t have any incidents with wayward bleach.
I made a 50/50 bleach and water mixture and put it in an old hairspray bottle. I misted the stenciled area. It didn’t do much, so I dumped it out and put straight bleach in the bottle and then misted it again. Go with the straight bleach. You’ll be able to get away with a lighter coat and have much less chance of it bleeding.
Then, after the letters were noticeably lighter than the shirt, I stretched it open and had Macy yank the cardboard out quickly. I immediately shoved the whole shirt (freezer paper still attached) into a sink full of OxiClean water. I’m not sure if this step is actually necessary, but we did it. The OxiClean is supposed to neutralize the bleach. Or maybe it just makes an explosion….whatever…worked for us.
I peeled off the paper and rinsed the shirt out well and then threw it in the washer for a regular wash.
End result?
Happy St. Patrick’s Day
My pal Sabra (she really is my pal…we slept in the same bed once) over at Sew A Straight Line made this to celebrate:

And I like the Easter one even better!
St. Patrick’s Day Dinner
Do you do anything festive?
As long as I can remember, my mom made corned beef and cabbage and Irish soda bread for St. Patrick’s Day dinner. She moved to Florida when I was a newlywed and my brother came to live with BC and I. As St. Patrick’s Day approached, Blake (that’s my brother) asked if I was making our traditional dinner. I said no, because I didn’t think anyone actually liked it. He said “THAT’S UN-AMERICAN!”
Yes, really.
So, I hit the store and we had dinner, just like my mom always made. I even colored our lemonade green. However, I still don’t have a green gingham tablecloth like she did.
Here’s my mom’s soda bread recipe!
Irish Soda Bread
3 c flour
1/4 c sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 c buttermilk
1 1/2 c raisins
Combine all dry ingredients. Stir in buttermilk to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface 5 minutes while adding raisins. Pat to flatten into a 9″ round 1 1/2″ think loaf. Place on greased pan. Cut a cross 1/2″ deep and gently open with finger tips. Glaze with egg white if desired. Bake 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees. Tap on bottom to see if done. Should be a dull thud. (I use my Kitchenaid for all of the mixing/kneading.)
Winner!

Spring Has Sprung @ Blue Cricket
I’m still digging out from under the post-trip laundry (10 loads so far) and trying to get my house back in order. It didn’t help that we got home after midnight and BC got up to leave town for work at 5:15 the next morning.
Thanks to Lindsey for guest blogging about their co-ed craft party. How awesome are some of their creations???
I’m slowly but surely answering emails.
In the mean time, I thought I’d mention something that Becca over at Blue Cricket Design is doing.
Every Thursday (started yesterday) through the end of April, she’s got someone guest blogging a great Spring project. I’ll be there April 8th. I’ve got some ideas in my head…hopefully one of them works out!
