Crystal trees

While we were away last weekend, my mom had picked up the supplies to try this craft from Family Fun.

Here’s what their version looked like:

Here’s what our first attempt looked like:

More like plates full of crystals than trees full of crystals, ey?

Moral of the story: Don’t use poster board.

We decided to try again. We gathered every thing we could think of.

Hint: Those subscription cards that come in magazines don’t work.

The verdict? (From L-R)

Upholstery foam, a 12 pack of soda box with the shiny graphic layer peeled off, and a toilet paper roll were the best.

It also took quite a bit longer than the article suggested. Maybe do this right before bed and then have a surprise in the morning.

I was just making a list of holiday/winter activities and crafts for us to do over the next two weeks and this looks like a fun one. I alwyas appreciate when someone has already tried it out and gives great pointers. i will let you know how ours goes :)

  2. Where did she find the bluing? Was it the same brand as Family Fun?

  3. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Val, yes…same brand. She got it at Lee's, which is an Associated Foods store so Macey's would probably have it. She said she's also seen it at Walmart, but I know you won't go there. :o)

  4. What a cute project! I will have to try that with the kids!

Hey,I'm having a linky party on Monday about Homemade gifts and was wondering if you would link up one of your great ideas. You can use an old post. You have so many ideas I think people would love to see!

Hope you are having a good weekend Char!

don't feel too bad about that not working. Years ago I worked in disability and decided to do this. Out of 50 odd not one worked. Your mum's looked great though.

  6. I did a couple crafts out of their most recent magazine too, the toilet paper roll snowflake (turned out fantastic) and popsicle stick christmas tree, my son really loved that one! I love crafts!

what a fun, kid friendly project!
