Silhouette Dust Cover

***This dust cover is for the original Silhouette SD (which was THE ONLY Silhouette when I wrote this post).  I don’t have dust cover patterns for the CAMEO or the Portrait.***

So, you’ve taken advantage of one of the Silhouette deals and you’re LOVING your machine so much you can’t bear to put her in a drawer…what’s a girl to do?

Whip up a quick and easy dust cover, that’s what. And did I mention that you can make this out of a single fat quarter? ‘Cause you can!

Supplies:
Fat quarter
Silhouette Dust Cover pattern piece PDF (the bottom measurement will be 6 3/8″ when printed correctly)
Sewing machine with thread
About 15 minutes Winking smile

Turn your fat quarter so that one of the 18” ends is at the bottom. Cut off 14″ so you have a piece that is 18” wide and 14” high (the bottom piece in this picture).

Fold the top piece in half and cut out the pattern piece. You’ll have 2 opposite end pieces

Place the end pieces even with the bottom edge of your fabric so that the short end (of the end pieces) points out and start pinning.

Pin all the way around the end pieces and then sew with a 1/2” seam.

Then you’ll want to hem the bottom of the dust cover 1/2” all the way around. I folded and pressed a scant 1/4” and then another 1/4”. Stitch hem in place.

Put it on your Silhouette and feel much better about leaving her out to admire.

    LOVE that beautiful fabric!

  2. Erika Jean says:

You should just rename this blog "The Silhouette Blog". I've enjoyed reading…. but well, I don't have a silhouette & I'm never going to be able to afford one. I miss your old school projects – but for now I'm going to unsubscribe.

  3. Nice! I may use this and make one of these for my printer. I hate that thing. Oh and if you would just send me that silhouette right there I could make one for that too. :D

  4. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Meg, you could absolutely do that. I stuck a piece of paper up against the ends of my machine and then traced it and added 1/2" for seam allowances. The 18" is because the machine is 17" wide (1/2" on both sides for seams). It was WAY easy and I love how well it fits!

  5. Yay! I might be able to actually make this with my newbie sewing skillz. Woot!
(and funny…I was just asking Char for MORE Silhouette ideas, lol!)

  6. Love your ideas… gotta get my sewing machine working so i can do some of your projects!!

  7. Okay, since my Silhouette is basically like my third child, I am pretty much loving this idea. My poor baby (Silhouette baby that is) currently resides under a table. This is the perfect solution!

If you don't mind, I'll be featuring this on my blog in a week or so, all credit linked back here!

    Thanks for sharing!

  8. Beth Eaton says:

LOVE IT and I LOVE the colors!! Although if I had one it would never have a cover on it becuase I would be ussing it too much!

  9. maybe i should make one for my mom…though i doubt her's even gets a day's rest.
wondering…how do you like how the heat transfer stuff for shirts washes up?

  10. Barefoot Apron says:

you always read my mind. I was putting away mine tonight and thought to myself, ah I wish I had a cover so I could just leave it out. 15 mins later I read your post. LOL

  11. This is genius. But that doesn't seem to cover it. So I tried to find some other word. And the thesaurus gave me: virtuoso…which stinks. So I'll stick with genius. I'm loving this. Crushing on it! Like, I might send it a note saying:
Do you like me? Check yes, or no.

  12. Stacy @ She's {kinda} Crafty says:

I will be making one of these this week! Thank you for the template and the wonderful idea!

  13. Larry and Pam says:

Aren't you sweet!! I don't have a silhouette, but I do have a cricut… a gift from my adoring husband. I have been meaning to make a cover for it for some time and just haven't gotten around to getting it done, but you have inspired me to do it with your lovely fabric and your wonderful pattern! Don't know if the machines are near enough the same, but I suspect your inspiration will be enough to finally spur me on. Thanks so much for your continued inspiration!

  14. Amanda Brantley says:

@ Larry & Pam…Custom crops has a free pdf pattern for a cover for the cricut expression!! Google it! I just downloaded mine. Now just have to decide on fabric…which may be tough.

  15. Stephanie says:

This is beautiful! I've been contemplating purchasing a Silhouette for a while now. Isn't it funny that I want one even more now so I can make a cute cover for it!

  16. Awesome! Now to pick fabric that my husband can stand {since he's nice enough to let me have it on his desk!}

  17. thanks so much for this awesome tutorial! I just made one for my "third child", and love it. What a quick project that's useful too!

  18. Great I was on the fence about getting the Silhouette (and selling my Cricut) and now I really want to :)

  19. Such a great idea Char! I love it! Must make one tonight! Girl, you are one crafty, talented woman!

  20. theluckiest says:

Hmm… when you pinned it all the way around the end pieces, did you have some fabric left over? My 14" side has about 2" of fabric left over after I pin all the way around the side piece- do you think I printed it not-to-scale? I would just put it on the Silhouette and see if it fits, but honestly, it's being shipped as we speak and I'm jumping the gun a bit making this cover! hehe
I also am super stoked about all these Silhouette ideas- I just ordered mine as part of MADE's promotion and can't wait to get to work on stuff!

  21. Char @ Crap I've Made says:

NO…there shouldn't be any left over. The printed pattern piece should measure right around 6 3/8" across the bottom when printed to scale.

Thanks for mentioning that. I've added that info to the tutorial. I tried to email you back, but you don't have that enabled on your profile!

  22. (oops, I was logged into the wrong email when I posted before- that's why there was no email address!)
Thanks! I will double check that when I get home today. I already cut (what I assume is the) wrong size ends, but I have a coordinating print I can use now for the ends! Thanks for the tutorial!

  24. Crafty Girls says:

Super Awesome! Thanks for posting the turorial! And, of course, how beautiful in Heather Bailey fabric! I am so making this tonight!

  25. What a great idea!

Now, can you post some tutorials so I can learn how to do things on my Silhouette, so I wouldn't have to use the dust cover???!!!

  26. I love this idea and the fabric is fab! I don't have a Silhouette (I'm from a totally different generation) but I have lots of things that need covering up!

  27. I just uploaded a pic of mine to your flickr group (once I got the end pieces printed the correct size hehe)! Thanks for the tutorial!

  28. Thanks for sharing this. I made one tonight and I love it. You can see a photo of it on the Thing A Day blog – Silhouette Cover

  29. I think this is the best 'crap' ever! ;) thanks for this.. I so need a cover.

  30. I did it! I used your pattern and instructions, and I just finished making one for my new Silhouette. I had been just throwing a piece of folded fabric over it, but now it has its own unique, distinctive, and pretty dust cover, and I love it! Thank you for the inspiration, and most of all for the pattern! I guess I'm in the mood to do the great 2011 cover-up thing. I was covering things yesterday, too – my new ice cream maker, my oval slow cooker, and my KitchenAid mixer. I feel so virtuous today, making all that "crap", lol!

  31. Done! perfect tutorial! I love the new cover on my brand new silhouette!

  32. Welcome to Lulu's life. says:

I made one last night! Thanks for the great pattern. I ran across the 2 extra inches as well. That might have been why I had so much puckering. After some unpicking I got it to work out and actually cut off the extra 2 inches. It still fit perfect with the smaller ends. I'll have to upload to the pool as well.

  33. The Lyon and the Rose says:

I love this idea and will hopefully one day need a dust cover… but right now I need a good solution to storing it and traveling with it… I have yet to find a bag that it fits in.

  34. You are my hero…I just bought my very 1st silhouette tonight :D

  35. Oh, this is PURE Genius!! I love my Silhouette SD so much that I named her…Sadie! Gonna make a cover for my Sadie…bwa ha ha, can’t wait! Thank you!

  36. Desperately searching for a Silhouette Cameo dust cover AND/OR someone to make it for me!!

  37. Oh my this is wonderful… Where on earth did you get that wonderful material… I have a yearning need to go to fabric store soon :)

  38. I just made this!!!!! I found you searching for a pattern!!!! Love it! I added vintage lace to mine and some ribbon:)

  39. Do you have a pattern for the cameo? I’m dying to make one but don’t know how and dont’ want to pay for the pattern.

  40. I realized after I cut fabric this isn’t for the cameo. The old silhouette must have been smaller. Do you have a pattern for the cameo?

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

I don’t. Silhouette actually sells a dust cover for the CAMEO, though. I’m not sure of the price, but it might be worth checking out.

      • Thanks for your quick response! I’ve never had a blogger reply before :)
I found one on the Silhouette Plus forum.
