Mother’s Day Sign with Martha

So, you realize there are only 16 days left until Mother’s Day, right?

Coming off the awesome insanity that was SNAP! = Mother’s Day totally sneaking up on me

Fortunately, I had all this Martha (yes, THAT Martha) goodness to inspire me:

Available at Michael’s and now also at JoAnn’s

If you haven’t already, you MUST check out the Martha Stewart Crafts by Plaid paints.  You can use them on virtually any surface (glass, metal, wood, terracotta, etc) and the colors/finishes are FAB.  And don’t even get me started on the tools!  The tops that screw directly onto the paint bottles make me WAY happier than they should.

So, what’d I make?  A sophisticated beachy sign/piece of art with my favorite mom saying:

I started out with a board from the hardware store (cheap…$7 or so) that I had BC cut down a bit and 3 colors of paint.

The one on the left is called Sea Lavender (I don’t know).  The one in the middle is Beach Glass.  And, the one on the right is Sterling.

I did a very thin coat (watered it down…is that called a wash?) of the Sea Lavender over the whole board.

Then I picked out one of the stencils, a damask-y pattern from the Flourish set

and used some stencil adhesive spray and the foam pouncer tops

and I did some stenciling.

I applied the Sterling first

and then layered on the Sea Glass.

Once it was dry, I gave it a light sanding.  I wanted it to look old and faded.

The last step was to add the lettering.  I cut the phrase out of vinyl and removed where I wanted the paint to be and then applied it to my board.

I used the Sea Glass with the foam pouncer top to fill in the vinyl stencil as well.

Are you making a Mother’s Day gift for someone that has mothered you?

Will you tell me what it is?  (This isn’t actually for my mom…she reads my blog!)

i’m sorry, but to me, “Home is where your mom is” makes me think: “The cemetary?”

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Then this probably isn’t the project for you. ;)

Or, you could easily put a different phrase at the bottom.

  2. Love it Char! Beautiful colors! ;) I might need to do this for my mom!!

  3. Cute! I like seeing the wood grain through the paint. And this is one of my FAVORITE phrases. :)

  4. lovely project!! thanks for sharing it and all the great MS products.

  5. I love it! I always say that about my mom: Home is where she is. Hmmm…You’ve inspired me for Mother’s Day!

  6. What a unique saying! I’ve never heard that take on that quote and I LOVE it…. No matter how old I am I’ll always call my mom to make me feel better when I’m sick :)

    Super cute sign <3 it!

  7. Super cute! I don’t know what sea lavender is either, but I used it on my project too. Adorable!
(Um, “home is where your mom is” make mes think of, well, Home.”

  8. Oh I love it Char!! The colors (seriously – what’s with that name??) are so pretty together and I love the phrase at the bottom. :)

  9. I’m making chocolate covered strawberries for my mom, and 2 mom-in-laws

  10. I love the phrase you chose! I think it’s the perfect way to express what moms mean!
    Great project!

  11. I love the overall design and the colors coordinate beautifully – but is it just me (or maybe it’s the lighting in the photo), or could the text stand to be darkened a bit? It seems like there’s not a lot of contrast there so the lettering almost gets lost, but again that could just be a result of seeing it as photos on a screen.

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Yeah…it’s better in real life. I edited until I was bluer than those letters trying to get it more obvious in the pics but no dice!

  12. I always wanted to give out crafts as present. They are more personable and sweeter. But I never have a chance to make all those presents.

  13. Very pretty! I’m pinning this to my “mother’s day ideas” board, as this is a great – and inexpensive – gift idea! As for the sea lavender name for the paint – it reminds me of certain clothing company catalogs, where the colors aren’t simply called what they are – for example: orange, but rather mandarin sorbet or Moroccan spice jubilee!

  14. I love the martha stewart glitter, and had been coveting the glitter paint from home depot. I got way to excited when I found some on closeout at NPS. The husband thought I was nuts. But that is some seriously awesome glitter paint! It looks fantastic!

  15. I often forget when I’m talking to someone and call my mom’s house home. My mom always chimes in with “this will always be your home!” I have to use this phrase on something for her, and I have a piece of 1/4″ plywood in the garage that would be perfect. Thanks so much, Char :)

  16. I esp love the grain of the wood showing through – that doesn’t always work but you really made it gorgeous. I’m still giggling at your answer to that first comment…

  17. I love it! Pretty stencil choice, and I think the quote is fun. :) I also like the placement of the quote…not right smack in the middle. It looks really cool where you put it!

  18. Martha never give me NOTHI”N and I feel resentful!!

  19. that looks great!

  20. I love it, especially the colors, reminds me of the beach!

  21. Every weekend i used to visit this web site, because i want enjoyment, as this this site conations in fact
    fastidious funny information too.
