Sound of Music Nursery Art

If you’re here for the CAMEO giveaway, it’s one post down.

If you want to see how I made the art in the DIY Blogger House nursery, you’re in the right place.

Lara of Less Cake {more frosting} and I collaborated on this nursery.  When you get a couple of Sound of Music dorks together working on a room, you’re just asking for some sort of movie reference.  And, since clothes made out of curtains don’t make sense in a room that’s not for an actual baby (or ever), artwork it was.  Winking smile

Lara showed me Copeland’s Colorful Nursery from Project Nursery and we knew we HAD to use that phrase.  And, we knew we wanted BIG.  We looked at canvases, but my signature project budget was running low.  We thought about painting it on the wall, but I was worried about a) screwing up and b) having to spend that much time in the house that last week.  So, inspired by the amazing artwork in Mandi’s entryway, we went with plywood.

I picked up this piece (4’ X 4’, thin…maybe 1/4”, pre-cut) at Lowe’s for about $14.  I went through the entire stack before settling.  I liked the movement of the grain.

Then, I took Lara a Diet Coke and she came up with a sketch/design.

I separated the design in my Silhouette Studio software, and cut the script-y font out of vinyl using my CAMEO.  I applied the vinyl to the board and painted 2 coats using regular old cheap acrylic craft paint.  Then I peeled off the vinyl.

You’ll notice that I jacked up the colors.  Oops.  It still turned out awesome, right?

Once that was dry, I cut the print font out of vinyl with my CAMEO and applied that to the board.  The white paint needed 3 coats, but that may be due to the fact that it had been in the basement for like 5 years.

It needed just a little bit more *something*, so I went with 2 coats of a gloss poly,

sanding between coats (and taking awesome cell phone pics in my garage in the dark).

The total cost for this was right around $20.

  1. Adorable! I would have never thought to use that song for a nursery but I love it. The room is so cute! And I am in love with those curtains! You gals did a GREAT job!

  2. I LOVE this idea, but if this were a functioning nursery, I would strongly suggest a couple of quick substitutions. First, PureBond Plywood is available at Home Depot, and it’s formaldehyde free. This is HUGE! Instead of subjecting your little one to off-gassing and chemicals (in fact, most of the plywood scraps have a stamp that says “Dust from this plywood has been known to cause cancer in California” which I learned the hard way…). Also, Home Depot carries an all-natural beeswax sealer that is probably safer than any chemical polyurethane and still give that nice shiny finish. I know I may sound a touch overzealous, but when it comes to infants and children, my thoughts are that it’s best to introduce as few chemicals as possible. I know you can’t win ‘em all, but these products are readily available and only marginally more expensive. It’s worth it for your health!

  3. So…I think my son needs that nursery…especially the green crib and blue crib skirt! :P

  9. You painted the vinyl? What color was it to begin with?
I just think that is really clever. I love the artwork, such a bold statement.

  10. Cute!

  11. Following Silhouette blog. :)

  12. Plywood has never looked cuter!

  13. I am commenting on this post because on the massive comments on the previous post. I just tried to use the promo code “CRAP” to buy some vinyl on Silhouette’s site, but it’s not working. Is it no longer available? Do you have a way to report this Silhouette so they can fix it? Thanks!

    • Char @ Crap I've Made says:

Thanks! It should be working now. For some reason they forgot to activate my code for this promo!

  14. Nancy Pham says:

Ive been dying to get my hands on the CAMEO!

  15. I love this…BUT, I’m confused. What do you mean, you painted the vinyl and then peeled it off? Did you use the negative as a stencil? Or did you literally paint over the vinyl? Can you please clarify? We’d love to try something similar!

  16. I love that you used a song as your inspiration for the wall art. It came out s adorable. I so would love a Cameo to enhance my arts and crafts. Thanks for the opportunity to win one!

  17. Erin Behring says:

  18. I love you my designing buddy. And I ADORE how this sign turned out. You freakin’ ROCKED this project out. I’m pretty sure it was the single most awesome thing in the house. At least I loved it.

  19. Lovin’ this! Just curious, how did you attach it to the wall?? I don’t want it dropping on my little guy or anything :)

  20. So I’ve never fully seen The Sound of Music. I got about half way through with my grandpa the other day then he had to go to bed. HOW does it end?! LOL!

This is too cute. Good job, Char+Lara…diet coke buddies! ;)

  21. By far that is one of the most unique ways to use the plywood that I have seen. Simple & very beautiful, I like it! Awesome that the cameo works with the vinyl! GREAT JOB!

  22. I love the nursery! I’m a blogging beginner and I have a question…how do you attach the silhouette file to your blog? I can not figure it out!

  23. SO cute! I love the Sound of Music too but was never this creative to do anything like this for my son’s room. So since I don’t have a Silhouette (and am now seriously jonesing for one) can you explain why actually one needs to use transfer paper? Seems like you could smooth on the vinyl and be done, so is the transfer paper absolutely essential? I can’t find a site to really explain it well. Thanks! :)

  24. Link exchange is nothing else however it is just placing the other person’s blog link on your page at appropriate place and other person will also do similar in favor of you.

  25. Amy Esparza says:

Great DIY! I am definitely doing it and I love the green crib! Did you buy it that color or paint it? If you painted it I am dying to know the name and brand. It is fabulous! Thanks! :)

I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  27. Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a
sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put
the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.

She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is
completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
